We
believe in supporting our community, and do so not just
by keeping as much business as possible local but also
by actively participating in community events and
coordinating with other local nonprofit organizations.
Some of these activities include helping to organize and
line up the annual 4th of July parade in Fort Pierre,
providing free local transportation to and from large
community events to helping cut down and relocate the
Fort Pierre Christmas tree and even cooking hot dogs and
brats the first weekend of the horse races at the
Stanley County Fair Grounds.
We have
had a team in the SD Relay for Life since 2008 called
River Cities Cruisers. Our first year with a team in the
relay we raised the bar after setting the record for
amount donated by a single team, we raised over $7,000.
Then in 2009 we broke our own record by raising over
$8,800. River Cities Cruisers has increased the
competition level among other teams pushing everyone to
generate more funds resulting in larger donations to the
American Cancer Society from this community. River
Cities Cruisers raises funds through bake sales, raffle
tickets, and pot luck lunches. They also have an annual
rummage sale, selling donated items from local
residents, business and organizations. If you are not
able to make it to any of these; there is always the
annual poker run, where you can drive or ride any motor
vehicle on the run.
River
Cities Public Transit supports the youth in our
community by annually sponsoring youth sports leagues
and offering a discounted rate to youth participating in
summer recreational activities. We have coordinated with
the Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA since 2006
transporting students to these organizations through the
school year at a low rate per participating family. We
continue to coordinate with the YMCA through the summer
as well by providing vehicles needed for their summer
program. In 2007 we began coordinating with the Fort
Pierre Community Center/Stanley County Gold Program by
providing coordinated transportation to and from field
trips through the summer and on Fridays through the
school year.
Our
coordination with non-profit agencies also includes
Pierre/Fort Pierre’s local human services agency Oahe
Inc. Since 2007 River Cities Public Transit and Oahe
Inc. have coordinated in grant writing to provide more
vehicles for their clients’ transportation, as well as
maintaining their fleet of vehicles. We also work with
Oahe Inc. to provide public transportation for several
of their clients to and from work or medical appointment
and help them step closer towards independent living
Recently
River Cities Public Transit has sponsored one of the
South Dakota Honor Flight members. The Honor Flight is
sending WWII Veterans from South Dakota to visit the
National WWII Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery
in Washington DC this year. We are proud to be a sponsor
and hope enough funds are generated to allow all of the
Veterans that have applied the chance to go.
