Grants for Veterans Living in Highly Rural Counties

Highly Rural Transportation Grants (HRTG) is a grant-based program that helps Veterans in highly rural areas travel to VA or VA-authorized health care facilities. This program provides grant funding to Veteran Service Organizations and State Veterans Service Agencies to provide transportation services in eligible counties.  In Stanley County, American Legion Post 20 located in Fort Pierre has received such a grant.  They in turn have contracted with River Cities Public Transit to provide the service. The counties that are eligible and being served in this area include: Buffalo, Clark, Dewey, Hand, Hyde, Haakon, Jerauld, Jones, Kingsbury, Lyman, Miner, Potter, Sanborn, Spink, Stanley, Sully, Ziebach. For veterans living in these counties they just need to call RCPT at (605) 945.2360 to schedule a ride.  The call needs to be at least two days in advance, it can be up to two weeks or more before the scheduled appointment.

If you are part of an immediate family where one or both of the parents are currently on active duty, the other family members will receive free travel in the Pierre / Fort Pierre area with RCPT. For travel outside the Pierre/Fort Pierre area and within the state contact the office for fare quote. Be sure you can prove 1 or more family members are on active duty.

Active Duty PhotoVeterans Preference:

If you are returning from active duty and find yourself without a job contact RCPT; we are offering veterans preference to all military returning from active duty. This means in a job interview where you are competing with other applicants you will get 5 extra points, and if you’re a disabled veteran you will receive 10 extra points out of 100. While you’re not guaranteed a job, if you have some of the skills required with veteran’s preference you become very competitive in the selection process.
